Here at the North West Wales Netball League we are super proud of the umpires we have. We encourage every team to have an umpire or at least have someone training to become one. We are committed to helping umpires pass their C award exam in order to make them fully qualified umpires.
Here's how we do it with 9 easy steps to becoming an umpire with the NWWNL...
Step 1 -
Player shows interest in becoming an umpire
Step 2 -
Player takes "Intro into Umpiring" course with Welsh Netball*
Step 3 -
After the course, player can shadow a fully qualified umpire/mentor at league games
Step 4 -
Player takes "C award Umpiring" course with Welsh Netball*
Step 5 -
Player is mentored by qualified umpire collecting half fee (£5) other half to go to mentor
Step 6 -
Player will be mentored using "Standard Mentoring System" until deemed fit to take pre-test

Step 7 -
When pre-test is passed player can umpire solo (providing the co-umpire is fully qualified) until test can be taken**
Step 8 -
Umpire secretary will book the C award test
Step 9 -
Once test is passed, umpire can then umpire matches in the league and collect full fee (£10)

** Step 6 applies to Divisions 2 & 3 only. Learning umpires in Division 1 must ALWAYS be accompanied by a mentor
Mentoring
We take pride in the mentoring system that has been introduced in the recent years which has helped roughly 10 new umpires pass their C award tests and become fully fledged umpires.
To become a mentor you must be an active* umpire and have at least two seasons of qualified umpiring in an adult competitive league.
Contact the league umpire secretary for more details or click here to send her an email.

During Step 5 of the above process, it is the learning umpires responsibility to book a mentor for every game they are required to umpire for. A list of the current mentors can be found on the CONTACT US tab of this website, including the Teams they play for. Most care contactable through Facebook or you can contact the umpire secretary for more contact details.

In order to mentor a training umpire we follow a detailed score card with the relevant competencies required to become a C grade umpire. These are very similar to the score sheets that are used by the examiner to complete the final assessment of the umpire.
The Mentor will score the trainee on each section and when they are happy the score is over 80% they can nominate for a pre-test. This should also be discussed with the umpire secretary.

*An active umpire is one who has been umpiring on a regular basis, at least once a month in the past year.
